Ibanez as we know it today began when the Hoshino Gakki company started importing Salvador Ibáñez guitars from Spain in the 1920's - hence the Spanish sounding name! When Ibáñez went out of business, Hoshino Gakki took the "Ibanez" brand and began manufacturing guitars themselves. Original famous for their remarkable quality copies (much sort after now), the modern Ibanez brand began by copying manufacturers like Gibson and Fender and offering them at more access price range.
For many Aussie guitarists, including people in the Coleman's Music Melbourne team, Ibanez guitars from the 70's were actually better than the big brands they copied! In the late 70's Ibanez began their own guitar designs, like the double-cut Ibanez Artists (Ar300 for example) - and they also began partnering with well-known guitarists like George Benson, producing several iconic models. This made Ibanez famous for their innovation and quality.
