It has the unmistakable feel of an era when Japanese builders were producing seriously capable shred guitars with plenty of character.

1980s Japanese Fernandes

Fernandes’ “The Function” series appeared in the early 1980s and included a number of high-performance shapes, including Strat-style, Explorer-style and Flying V-style models. The V versions are far less common today than the more familiar Fernandes and Burny models, which makes surviving examples particularly interesting for players and collectors of Japanese guitars.

Built for High-Gain Playing

The Function-series V guitars were designed around the needs of hard rock and metal players, with hot-output pickup layouts, fast-playing necks and locking tremolo hardware appearing across the range. The result is a guitar that feels very different from a traditional vintage-spec V.

Compact, Fast-Playing Feel

Many Fernandes BSV-series Flying V models from this period used a shorter scale length than a typical Gibson-style V, giving them a slinkier feel and making bends, vibrato and fast lead work especially easy.

Japanese Build Quality

Fernandes built a strong reputation through the late ’70s and ’80s for well-made Japanese instruments with consistent neck work, solid hardware and plenty of personality. That reputation is a big part of why older Fernandes guitars have developed such a following today.

Key Features & Specifications

Brand: Fernandes

Series: The Function

Body Style: Flying V

Era: 1980s

Country of Origin: Japan

Solid-body electric guitar

Performance-focused 1980s Fernandes design

High-output pickup configuration typical of The Function V models

Locking tremolo hardware typical of the series

22-fret configuration commonly used across BSV models

Rosewood fingerboard commonly found on BSV-series examples

Who Is It For?

This is a great fit for players into 1980s Japanese guitars, hard rock, metal and shred, or anyone wanting something far less common than the usual mainstream V-shaped guitar. It also has obvious appeal for collectors of vintage Fernandes and Japanese-made instruments.

Our Take

This is exactly the sort of older Japanese guitar that has become much harder to find. The combination of unusual Fernandes history, aggressive 1980s styling and proper Japanese construction gives it more personality than a lot of modern reissues or generic V-style guitars.

Available from Colemans Music South Melbourne with Fast Shipping Aus Wide.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0573/5386/3220/files/PRELOVED-FERNANDES-The-Function-Flying-V-1.jpg?v=1792093343
