Hayden Morris is the in-house guitar technician at Colemans Music, bringing an engineering-minded approach to guitar repairs, custom setups, wiring and fretwork.
Coming from an engineering- and mechanics-based family background, Hayden has always been deeply interested in the inner workings of guitars and other instruments. When he picked up the guitar more than 15 years ago, that curiosity quickly developed into a determination to understand how guitars work and how they can be made to sound and play their best.
Hayden has worked alongside Colemans Music for more than five years. He is also an active live musician who tours with his band, giving him a practical understanding of what players need from their instruments in rehearsals, onstage and on the road.
A Curiosity for How Guitars Work
Hayden’s interest in guitar repair began almost as soon as he started playing. Rather than treating the guitar as a sealed object, he wanted to understand every part of it: how the neck, frets, bridge, pickups, controls and hardware work together, and how each adjustment changes the way the instrument feels and sounds.
At 13, he was already fearlessly pulling apart his own guitars, determined to uncover their secrets and learn what he could change to make them respond the way he wanted.
Learning by Taking Guitars Apart
Hayden began exploring the construction and setup of his own instruments, building a practical understanding through careful experimentation.
The Go-To Guitar Tech
He had become the person musicians in his circle trusted for guitar fixes, adjustments and setups.
Building Technical Knowledge
Hayden’s hunger for knowledge did not stop with working on his own instruments. He sought out specialised courses and studied both vintage and modern guitar-building techniques, combining formal learning with years of practical workshop experience.
That broader understanding gave him the confidence to establish his own workshop and begin offering repair and setup services to other musicians. Each instrument brought a different challenge and another opportunity to improve his knowledge of construction, playability and electronics.
Working with Colemans Music
Working alongside Colemans Music expanded Hayden’s experience by giving him access to guitars from a wide range of brands, eras and price points. From entry-level instruments to highly valued Custom Shop guitars, every repair has helped him refine his craft and develop a broader understanding of how different instruments are designed and built.
Over more than five years with Colemans Music, Hayden has worked across straightforward maintenance jobs and more involved technical work. His focus remains the same in every case: identify what the instrument needs, complete the work carefully and return a guitar that feels dependable and enjoyable to play.
Custom Guitar Setups
Adjusting an instrument around the player, their preferred feel, string choice, playing style and practical needs.
Repairs and Troubleshooting
Investigating faults, identifying the underlying cause and completing the work needed to restore reliable operation and playability.
Wiring and Electronics
Completing detailed wiring work and addressing electronics problems with a careful, methodical approach.
Fretwork
Carrying out precise fretwork to improve consistency, comfort and the overall playing response of the instrument.
A Working and Touring Musician
Hayden also performs live and tours with his band. That experience gives him a player’s perspective on guitar repairs and setups, because an instrument has to do more than feel good on a workshop bench. It needs to stay dependable through rehearsals, performances, transport and changing venues.
His live experience keeps the practical needs of the musician at the centre of the work, including:
- Comfort and consistency across a full performance
- Reliable tuning and stable adjustment
- Controls and electronics that work without surprises
- A setup that suits the player rather than a generic specification
- Confidence when the instrument is used onstage
- Long-term usefulness beyond the initial repair
The Same Care for Every Guitar
Hayden believes that the price or name on the headstock should not determine the level of attention an instrument receives. A well-loved beginner guitar can be every bit as important to its owner as a rare or expensive instrument.
Whether it is a humble Squier or a cherished Custom Shop ESP or Gibson, every guitar receives the same undivided attention and care so it can reach its full potential.
