Description
Fender J Mascis Signature Jazzmaster® Pickup Set
The Fender J Mascis Signature Jazzmaster Pickup Set brings the distinctive Jazzmaster sound of Dinosaur Jr.'s J Mascis to your own offset, with a warmer voice designed to work equally well with big fuzz and overdrive sounds or clean, open Jazzmaster tones.
Wound to J Mascis' specifications, this neck and bridge set uses Alnico 2 rod magnets, giving the pickups a warmer, sweeter response than many traditional Jazzmaster pickups while retaining the clarity and character that makes a Jazzmaster sound like a Jazzmaster.
Made for Fuzz, Drive & Big Clean Sounds
J Mascis has spent decades pushing the Jazzmaster well beyond its surf-guitar origins, particularly with Dinosaur Jr., where huge fuzz sounds, feedback and heavily driven amps sit alongside surprisingly clean and melodic guitar parts.
These pickups are designed around that versatility.
The Alnico 2 magnets soften some of the harder edges you might associate with brighter Jazzmaster pickups, producing a warmer response that Fender specifically designed to pair well with drive and fuzz pedals.
That doesn't mean they're simply high-output rock pickups, either. Fender actually rates them as Vintage output, so there's still plenty of dynamic response and clarity when you back the gain off.
Neck & Bridge Set
This is a complete neck and bridge pickup set, with the two pickups individually wound for their respective positions.
The neck measures approximately 7.27kΩ DC resistance, while the bridge comes in at approximately 7.31kΩ. Inductance is rated at 3.6 Henries for the neck and 3.7 Henries for the bridge.
The result is a nicely balanced pair rather than two identical pickups dropped into different positions.
Vintage-Style Construction
Under the covers, Fender has kept plenty of traditional pickup-building details.
The J Mascis set uses enamel-coated magnet wire, fibre bobbins and vintage-style cloth-covered lead wire, along with flush-mounted pole pieces for an even response across the strings.
Both pickups are also wax-potted, helping control unwanted microphonic squeal when you're using the sort of distortion and fuzz levels these pickups were designed to handle.
What Do They Sound Like?
Think warm Jazzmaster rather than excessively bright Jazzmaster.
You'll still get the open character, articulation and attack you'd expect from a proper Jazzmaster-style single coil, but the Alnico 2 magnets give the pickups a sweeter and slightly warmer overall response.
That makes them particularly interesting if you love the Jazzmaster platform but want something that handles fuzz, overdrive and driven amps exceptionally well without losing the cleaner side of the instrument.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are these the pickups from the Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster?
This is an important distinction. These are Fender's dedicated J Mascis Signature Jazzmaster Pickup Set, wound to J's specifications with Alnico 2 magnets. Fender lists the current Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster separately with its own Squier single-coil Jazzmaster pickups, so this aftermarket set shouldn't simply be described as replacement versions of the factory Squier pickups.
Are the J Mascis pickups high output?
Fender classifies them as Vintage output. Their character comes from the winding and Alnico 2 construction rather than simply pushing the output as high as possible.
Are they good with fuzz pedals?
Yes. That's one of the major attractions of this set. Fender specifically describes the warmer Alnico 2 design as responding particularly well to drive and fuzz pedals.
Can they still do clean Jazzmaster sounds?
Absolutely. Despite the association with J Mascis' heavily driven sound, these remain vintage-output Jazzmaster single coils and are designed to cover everything from fuzz-heavy walls of sound through to gentler vintage cleans.
Are these hum-cancelling pickups?
No. This is a single-coil Jazzmaster pickup set, so you should still expect the characteristics, including some potential noise, associated with traditional single-coil pickups.
Does the set include mounting hardware?
Yes. Fender includes the installation hardware with the set.
The Fender J Mascis Signature Jazzmaster Pickup Set is a great upgrade for players who love the character of a Jazzmaster but want a warmer voice that really comes alive when you start stacking fuzz, overdrive and a loud amp.
