A seriously cool and relatively uncommon Fender Japan Stratocaster from the golden era of Japanese Fender production.
This guitar has been opened up and inspected, and everything checks out as original. The neck pocket is clearly marked ST72-86DSC, confirming the model and, importantly, confirming that the scalloped maple fingerboard is factory specification rather than a later modification.
The J024364 Made in Japan serial number dates the guitar to the 1989–1990 period, placing it right around the time this model appeared in Fender Japan's 1990 catalogue.
Factory Scalloped Fender Japan Model
The ST72-86DSC was based around Fender's '72-style Stratocaster platform, complete with the large '70s headstock, bullet-style truss rod and three-bolt neck construction.
What separates the DSC from a regular ST72 is its performance-focused factory specification. Most notably, Fender Japan supplied these guitars with a fully scalloped maple fingerboard, allowing the player's fingers to contact the strings without pressing against the fingerboard itself.
It makes bends and vibrato incredibly responsive and gives the guitar a very distinctive playing feel.
The guitar retains its original factory pickup configuration, with DiMarzio HS-3 pickups in the neck and bridge positions and the original Fender single coil in the middle.

A Fascinating Fender Japan Strat
The ST72-86DSC is an interesting piece of Fender Japan history. Rather than being a standard MIJ Strat that has subsequently had its fingerboard scalloped, this model was designed and supplied by Fender Japan in this configuration from the factory.
This example is particularly appealing because it has now been opened and checked, confirming that the guitar remains in its original configuration, including the factory scalloped neck and original pickup set.
