The Klon KTR is Bill Finnegan’s production-era follow-up to the legendary Klon Centaur, designed to deliver the same core circuit philosophy in a more compact and practical format. This 2019 example gives you the classic Klon mix of clean boost, mid-rich overdrive and exceptional touch sensitivity without stepping into original Centaur pricing.
Like the Centaur, the KTR is at its best when used to push an amp or stack into another drive, but it also has enough gain on tap to work as a standalone overdrive. The three-control layout keeps things simple while the switchable buffer gives you useful control over how it behaves in a pedalboard signal chain.
Classic Klon Clean Boost & Overdrive
With the Gain control set low, the KTR works as a high-headroom clean boost that can push the front end of an amp harder without dramatically changing the basic character of your guitar. As Gain is increased, the circuit blends in the clipping stage for the smooth, articulate overdrive the Klon design became famous for.
Gain, Treble & Output
The control set is deliberately straightforward. Gain moves from clean boost into overdrive, Treble lets you shape the top end to suit different guitars and amps, and Output provides plenty of level for hitting the next stage of your rig.
Buffered or True Bypass
A side-mounted switch lets you choose between the traditional Klon-style buffered output and true bypass. The buffered setting can be useful on larger pedalboards or longer cable runs, while true bypass gives you a more conventional bypass option.
Why the KTR Matters
The KTR was designed by Bill Finnegan as the authorised successor to the Centaur. It keeps the defining Klon architecture — including the internal voltage-doubling approach and distinctive clipping behaviour — while using a smaller enclosure and modern production methods.

The KTR is one of those pedals where the hype can distract from how useful it actually is. Low Gain into a good amp is still where the Klon concept shines, but the extra gain, treble control and switchable buffer make it a genuinely practical pedal rather than just a collectible name.
