Helix Tones in a Compact Pedal, Becoming Accessible to every Guitarist.
Priced at $329, and available now online and at our Melbourne CBD store the Pod Express is accessible to almost any guitarist. Its ultra-portable design and ability to run on three AA batteries make it convenient for all players.
The new Pod Express is a nostalgic nod to the original POD, released 25 years ago. It's easy to see why the original POD was such a hit for Line 6: it offered guitarists a compact device that emulated a variety of classic amplifiers, along with Line 6's unique creations that both evoked and enhanced traditional amp sounds. The original POD also featured a wide range of effects and a spring reverb emulation, making classic tones accessible in a portable, backpack-friendly package.
Fast forward 25 years, and the landscape has changed dramatically. Amp modeling and capture technology are now ubiquitous, available in formats ranging from Mac and PC open-source software to budget-friendly Boss pedals, and extending to high-end rack systems used by touring professionals.
As Helix approaches its 10-year mark, Line 6 has adeptly adapted its advanced modelling technology to more affordable products by selectively reducing features. The HX Stomp brought Helix tones to compact pedalboards however the HX Stomp was a little complicated to new useres and beginner guitarists, while the Pod Go offered a more comprehensive solution with an integrated expression pedal and simplified signal path.
Enter the Pod Express, which, in many ways, echoes the simplicity of the original POD. It's straightforward to operate, especially once you get accustomed to the "alt" button—a callback to the original POD's controls. The miniaturization of Helix technology in Pod Express is near its limit, unless Line 6 decides to compete with ultra-compact devices like the Katana Go or Fender Mustang Micro.
Pod Express delivers first class tones suitable for professional studio recordings. It is reminiscent of the original POD but with the enhanced fidelity and subtlety of Line 6's flagship Helix technology. The POD Express Guitar gives guitarists seven amps, seven cabs, and 17 distortion, modulation, reverb, and delay effects—including a looper.
Use the onboard footswitches to engage amps and effects, change presets, sync time-based effects to a specific tempo, and activate the onboard tuner. It can store presets with a clever recall mechanism using the LEDs around the centre amp knob.
Connect an optional expression pedal to control volume, two assignable external footswitches, or a pedal and a single footswitch. Please note that it does lack Wah capability.
Pod Express is easy to recommend to any guitarist, whether as a backup for a main rig, a headphone solution, or a standalone desktop unit for recording. It also functions as an audio interface for Mac, PC, or iOS devices.
