What Does a Guitar Pedal Do?

A guitar pedal changes, enhances or controls the signal travelling between your guitar and amplifier.

Some effects add gain and saturation, while others introduce ambience, movement, pitch changes or dynamic control. Utility pedals can help you tune, switch between signal paths, record loops or manage a larger rig.

Pedals also interact with your guitar, pickups and amplifier. The same overdrive can sound very different through a clean Fender-style amplifier, a British-voiced valve amp or a high-gain setup. That interaction is why comparing pedals through a rig similar to your own can be so useful.

Common Types of Guitar Pedals

Overdrive Pedals

Overdrive pedals produce anything from a light edge-of-breakup sound to a strong mid-gain drive. They can be used as a main gain sound, to push a valve amplifier harder or to tighten another distortion pedal.

They are popular for blues, rock, country, indie, punk and worship guitar, but their usefulness extends well beyond any single style.

Distortion Pedals

Distortion pedals provide more gain, compression and saturation than a typical overdrive. Depending on the design, they can produce classic rock crunch, tight modern rhythm sounds or heavier sustained lead tones.

When choosing a distortion pedal, consider its EQ controls and how well its voicing works with your amplifier.

Fuzz Pedals

Fuzz can produce thick sustain, broken speaker textures, vintage psychedelic tones or aggressive modern sounds.

Different fuzz circuits respond very differently to guitar volume controls, pickup type and pedal order. Some vintage-style fuzz pedals prefer to be placed near the beginning of the signal chain.

Delay Pedals

A delay records your signal and repeats it after a selected amount of time. Short settings can create slapback echo, while longer delays can add space, rhythmic repeats or wide ambient textures.

Digital, analogue-style, tape-style and multi-mode delays each have a different character. Features can range from simple time and feedback controls to tap tempo, stereo operation, modulation and stored presets.

Reverb Pedals

Reverb creates the impression of playing in a physical space. Common sounds include spring, plate, room, hall and more experimental ambient reverbs.

Many amplifiers already include reverb, but a dedicated pedal can provide more control or access to sounds not available from the amp.

Chorus, Phaser, Flanger and Modulation

Modulation pedals add movement and texture.

• Chorus creates a wider, gently detuned sound.

• Phaser adds a sweeping series of peaks and dips.

• Flanger produces a more pronounced jet-like sweep.

• Tremolo changes volume rhythmically.

• Vibrato changes pitch to create movement.

These effects can be used subtly to add depth or pushed further for more obvious and experimental sounds.

Compressor and Boost Pedals

A compressor reduces the difference between quieter and louder notes. It can add sustain, even out clean rhythm parts and help picked notes sit more consistently.

A boost raises signal level and may be used to increase volume, push an amplifier or drive another gain pedal harder. Some boosts are deliberately transparent, while others add their own EQ character.

Wah, Filter and Pitch Effects

A wah pedal sweeps through a frequency range using a foot-operated treadle. Envelope filters create a related effect that responds automatically to playing dynamics.

Octave and pitch effects can add notes above or below the original signal, create harmonies or produce unusual synth-like textures.

Loopers, Tuners and Utility Pedals

A looper records and repeats phrases, making it useful for practice, songwriting and live performance.

Pedal tuners provide silent and convenient tuning on stage. EQ pedals, noise gates, switching pedals and signal buffers can help solve practical problems and make a larger pedalboard easier to control.

EarthQuaker Devices

EarthQuaker Devices pedals suit players looking for distinctive drive, fuzz, modulation and ambient effects.

Many EarthQuaker designs move beyond conventional sounds while remaining practical enough for everyday playing and performance.

NUX, Fender and TC Electronic

NUX offers compact pedals and digital effects at accessible prices, making the brand useful for beginners and players assembling a practical board on a budget.

Fender produces effects with familiar controls and strong visual design, while TC Electronic covers everything from affordable compact pedals to advanced delay, reverb and looping effects.

Our available brands change regularly, particularly within the used and consignment range.

New, Used and Consignment Guitar Pedals

A new guitar pedal is the straightforward choice if you want a current model in factory-fresh condition with the applicable manufacturer support.

Used pedals can provide strong value and access to discontinued sounds, earlier versions or models that are no longer widely available. Cosmetic wear does not necessarily affect performance, but condition, included packaging and power requirements should be checked before purchasing.

Consignment pedals are being sold on behalf of their owners. Like other preloved effects, they may be individual pieces that cannot be replaced once sold.

Building Your First Pedalboard

You do not need a large collection of effects to build a useful pedalboard.

A simple starting setup might include:

• A tuner for accurate and silent tuning

• An overdrive or distortion for gain sounds

• A delay or reverb for space and ambience

• A suitable power supply

• Patch cables and a board or case

Choose effects based on the sounds missing from your current guitar and amplifier. If your amp already produces a gain sound you enjoy, a delay, modulation pedal or looper may be a more useful first purchase than another overdrive.

Guitar Pedal Signal Chain Order

There is no compulsory pedal order, but a common starting point is:

1. Tuner

2. Wah or filter

3. Compressor

4. Overdrive, distortion and fuzz

5. Modulation

6. Delay

7. Reverb

8. Looper

This order is only a guide. Changing the position of a pedal can produce very different results. A delay placed before distortion will respond differently from one placed afterwards, while some fuzz circuits work best close to the guitar.

If your amplifier has an effects loop, delay, reverb and modulation pedals can often be placed there, particularly when using the amplifier’s own distortion. The best arrangement depends on your amp and preferred sound.

Powering Guitar Pedals Safely

Always check a pedal’s voltage, polarity, current requirement and connector type before connecting a power supply.

Many compact pedals use 9-volt DC centre-negative power, but this is not universal. Using the wrong voltage or polarity can damage a pedal.

An isolated power supply can help reduce noise when powering several effects. Digital pedals may also require more current than simple analogue pedals.

Pedalboards, Cases and Patch Cables

A pedalboard keeps effects secure and makes setup faster at rehearsals and gigs. Before choosing a board, consider the physical dimensions of each pedal, power supply placement and room for patch and power cables.

Allowing some spare space can make future changes easier. Explore our pedal cases and accessories.

Plan Your Board with the Colemans Guitar Pedal Studio

Our Guitar Pedal Studio lets you choose effects, arrange your signal chain and see how the pedals fit together at relative scale.

You can search by brand or effect type, position pedals on the virtual board and view the running total before adding the available setup to your cart. It is a practical way to check pedal dimensions and plan a complete signal chain before buying.

What to Consider When Choosing a Guitar Pedal

Before selecting a pedal, consider:

• The sound you want: Start with the musical problem you want the pedal to solve.

• Your guitar and pickups: Single coils and humbuckers can respond differently to the same effect.

• Your amplifier: Clean and overdriven amplifiers interact differently with gain and ambience pedals.

• Controls: Simple pedals are quick to adjust, while advanced pedals may offer presets, MIDI and deeper editing.

• Board space: Check the pedal’s exact dimensions, including room for side-mounted connections.

• Power requirements: Confirm voltage, polarity and current consumption.

• Mono or stereo: Stereo outputs can be useful for recording or dual-amplifier rigs.

• Presets and tap tempo: These features can make delay, reverb and modulation pedals easier to use live.

• New or used: Consider warranty, condition, price and availability.

• Analogue or digital: Choose according to sound and features rather than assuming one is always better.

Frequently Asked Questions

What guitar pedal should I buy first?

A tuner is the most practical first pedal. For a creative effect, choose according to what your amp is missing. An overdrive is useful for blues and rock, while delay, reverb or a looper can suit players who already like their amplifier’s core tone.

Do I need guitar pedals?

No. A guitar and amplifier can provide a complete sound without pedals. Effects become useful when you want additional gain sounds, ambience, modulation or greater control during a performance.

What order should guitar pedals go in?

A common order is tuner, wah, compressor, gain, modulation, delay and reverb. This is a starting point rather than a rule, and experimenting with the order can produce more individual sounds.

Can I use several guitar pedals together?

Yes. Multiple effects can be connected in a signal chain. You will need suitable patch cables and enough correctly specified power outputs. Larger boards may also benefit from isolated power and careful cable routing.

Can I use guitar pedals in an amplifier’s effects loop?

Yes, provided the amplifier has an effects loop. Delay, reverb and modulation pedals are commonly placed there, especially when using the amplifier’s preamp for distortion. Gain pedals are generally placed before the amplifier input.

Are analogue pedals better than digital pedals?

Neither is automatically better. Analogue pedals can offer simple controls and a particular response, while digital pedals can provide presets, stereo operation and several effect types. Choose based on the sound and features you need.

Are used guitar pedals worth buying?

Used pedals can offer excellent value and access to discontinued models. Check the condition, controls, connections, power requirements and included accessories before purchasing.

Can guitar pedals be used with bass?

Many guitar pedals will work with bass, but some may reduce low frequencies or respond differently to the instrument’s range. Dedicated bass pedals are often designed to retain more low end or blend the clean signal with the effect.

Do all guitar pedals use the same power supply?

No. Voltage, polarity and current requirements vary. Always check the manufacturer’s specifications before connecting power, even if the plug appears to fit.
